چکیده

Surveys for greater prairie-chickens (Tympanuchus cupido pinnatus) were conducted (includes birds of unknown sex) and located 151 booming grounds. Within survey blocks we observed 0.32 (0.23–0.42) leks/mi 2 and 10.8 (9.6–12.1) males/lek. Approximately 19% fewer leks and 30% fewer males were counted in survey blocks during spring 2009 than during spring 2008. Averages of annual densities observed during 1993–2002 were 0.2 leks/mi 2 and 11.5 males/lek.

Spring 2005 Prairie-Chicken Survey in Minnesota

Greater prairie-chickens (Tympanuchus cupido pinnatus) are a medium-sized grouse species (800–1000 g; 1.8–2.2 lbs). During spring they gather on communal breeding areas, or leks, where males display and compete for opportunities to mate. Prairie-chicken leks are also called booming grounds because males make a low-frequency, booming vocalization during their displays. Orange air sacs on the sid...

Spatial Variation in Lesser Prairie-Chicken Demography: A Sensitivity Analysis of Population Dynamics and Management Alternatives

The lesser prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus) is currently considered a candidate for protection under the Endangered Species Act. To identify potential limiting factors for lesser prairie-chicken populations, we developed an age-based matrix model of lesser prairie-chicken population dynamics to compare the relative importance of components of reproduction and survival, and determine...

Lekking and Nesting Response of the Greater Prairie-chicken to Burning of Tallgrass Prairie

In the southern Great Plains, the greater prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus cupido) is confined to tallgrass prairie, a habitat now largely converted to agriculture. Remaining prairie is highly fragmented and subjected to land management practices that greatly alter the ecosystem of this species. Chief among these practices are deliberate, large-scale spring burns associated with early intensive sto...
